Connecting Your Client Computers

Learn how to set up, register, and connect client computers to your server using a network edition of DaySmart Pet desktop software.

Written by Angel Horowitz

šŸ“ Overview

This article walks you through setting up, registering, activating, and connecting client computers using a network (Multi-Computer or Multi-Location) edition of DaySmart software. Follow the steps below in order — start with the server computer before setting up any client computers.

āš™ļø Step 1: Set Up the Server Computer

Learn how to register and update the server computer before connecting any client computers.

šŸ’”Pro Tip: If you are upgrading from a single computer license (Solo, Standard, or Professional) to a multiple computer license (Multi-Computer or Multi-Location), you will need to register your new serial number on the server before connecting any client computers.

Register the Server

  1. Select Register from the File pull-down menu.

  2. Register the program using your online account username and password.

  3. When prompted to activate, choose Activate Now.

  4. Go to File > Database Settings > Connection Settings. Write down the Server Name shown in the Network Settings section — you will need this when setting up your client computers.

Check for Updates

šŸ’”Pro Tip: It is recommended that your server is running the most recently released maintenance build of your version. This ensures all computers in your network are on the same version and build number.

  1. Go to Help > Check for Update.

  2. Click Yes to confirm that you want the software to search for available updates.

  3. If the software states you are already running the most current version, click Cancel and proceed to Step 2.

  4. If an update is available, click Auto Update to download and install automatically, or click Manual Update to download and install on your own.

āš ļø Please Note: If you download the update manually, be sure to complete the installation before setting up any client computers.

šŸ–„ļø Step 2: Set Up the Client Computers

Learn how to install, register, and connect each client computer to the server.

šŸ’” Which download should I use?

  • Recent Update — Use this if the client computer already has DaySmart installed and you are updating it to match the server version

  • Version 13 (includes SQL) — Use this if the client computer does not yet have DaySmart installed, as this version includes the required SQL components

  1. Download and install the software from the DaySmart Pet support downloads page here. Follow the instructions provided by the installation wizard.

    • If your version is not listed, please reach out to our support team at [email protected] to request that an installation link be sent to you.

  2. Start the software and select Register from the File pull-down menu. Register the program using your online account username and password.

šŸ’”Pro Tip: Be sure to register using an admin user's credentials, not a standard employee login.

  3. When prompted to activate, choose Activate Now.

  4. You may be prompted to select the server. If not, go to File > Database Settings > Connection Settings > Edit Connection Settings.

    • Select This is an additional computer (client) and press Continue.

    • Select Manual Setup and enter the server name from Step 1.

    • Click Continue.

šŸ’”Pro Tip: If you cannot remember the server name, click Auto Setup, select the server computer from the list, and click OK. The client computer will then attempt to connect to the database on the server automatically. Note that both the client and server computers must be on the same internet network with the server computer up and running for the Auto Setup to find the server.

  5. If you created a password for your database, enter it when prompted. Your client should now be connected to the server.

  6. Repeat these steps on all remaining client computers.
